They can be viewed as Roleplaying Games since readers typically have a Player Character who they control and that can improve abilities as gameplay progresses (and several books are written as series which allows Player Character to continue to be used in later books). They are typically Single-Player Games but see Clash of the Princes for an exception.

In many cases they use Dice and other extra material to simulate Combat or other challenges.
